The Parliament building has been the seat of the Hungarian National Assembly since 1896. It is the largest building in Hungary and at the same time one of the largest parliamentary buildings in the world. Part of the building is available for visiting with a guide, and the most important exhibits in its interior include the crown of Saint Stephen and the Hungarian coronation insignia.
The Hungarian parliament building represents the neo-Gothic style, but the decorations inside the parliament also have neo-baroque features. The design of the building was selected through a competition, and its author was Imre Steindl. The main facade of the building faces the Danube, but the entrance is on the opposite side of the building, on Kossuth Square.
The construction of this monumental building took almost thirty years and over 1,000 people worked at it. 40 kilograms of gold and half a million precious stones were used for interior decorations.
