Straubing is a historic city known for one of Bavaria's biggest folk festivals, the Gäubodenvolksfest. A valuable Old Town complex with Romanesque and Gothic churches, a market square and a characteristic town tower have been preserved here.
The beginnings of settlement in this area date back to the Neolithic times, and during the Roman period there was a large settlement here. Its monuments can be seen in the Gäuboden Museum. They are considered to be one of the most important collections from this period in Germany.
In the Middle Ages, the city was one of the seats of the Wittelsbachs. It was then that its greatest development took place, and a historic center was built, which can be seen until today. Among the historic attractions of Straubing are the Romanesque Church of St. Peter and the gothic chapels located in its vicinity, the gothic church of St. Jacob with a 95-meter tower and a wonderful stained glass window depicting Moses by Albrecht Durer.
The heart of the Old Town is the elongated market square with tenement houses from different eras and a Gothic town tower. There is now a viewpoint on it, from which you can view the panorama of the area. Within the buildings, you can also see the baroque Ursuline monastery with a church, designed by the famous Asam brothers.
The Gäubodenvolksfest is held in Straubing in August. It is one of the largest folk festivals in Bavaria, combined with a market, street games, performances and concerts. In autumn, on the other hand, the city hosts the Beer Festival, which is second only to Oktoberfest in Munich.
