Alter Elbtunnel is a tunnel located near Hamburg (more precisely under the River Elbe) connecting the districts of St. Paul and Steinwerder. Its interior is covered with terracotta. It consists of 2 pipes, which are transported in opposite directions. The tunnel is bored 24 meters deep and 426 meters long. Every year, Elbtunnel-Marathon and art exhibition take place on its premises.
Alter Elbtunnel was officially opened on September 7, 1911. Its author was a talented architect - Philipp Holzmann. Formerly this place was of great importance for the industry and the city's economy, today it is mainly a communication route and tourist attraction. Cyclists and pedestrians can use it 24 hours a day, while cars only at certain times and not on all days of the week.
