Erlangen is a picturesque city full of greenery, which has had strong links with France since the Reformation, and today is one of its refuges on German territory. The local Baroque buildings have survived in excellent condition despite the war, and numerous parks will make visiting more pleasant.
In 1686, Huguenots settled in Erlangen and sought refuge from religious persecution in France. Since then, the city has become a thriving center of French culture and to this day you can find many French cafes and confectioneries, and on the squares you can see the people playing boules.
The arrival of the Huguenots and the subsequent cultural flourishing of the city also translated into its buildings. Numerous parks and public buildings were built then. To this day, the Castle Garden and the Botanical Garden enjoy the greatest interest of visitors. In addition, in the city you can visit the Aroma Garden with fragrant plants. In summer, outdoor concerts take place in the Castle Garden, and lawns are used by residents to organize picnics.
An important architectural and cultural monument is the Rococo Margrabia Theater, which still operates today, which hosts the International Festival of Puppet Theaters every year. The city also attracts visitors with the Comic Book Festival and the Poets' Day, as well as the Bergkirchwaihn beer festival.
During the walks, you can admire the baroque and rococo architecture of Erlangen. In addition to tenements and palaces, the most important monuments include the Trinity Church, the Neustadter Church, the Huguenot Fountain and the Pauli Fountain.
The history of the city in which German and French culture is mixed can be found in the City Museum, and the daily life of the inhabitants is presented by the Amtshausschüpfl Museum.
