Foundation New Synagogue Berlin - Centrum Judaicum is the New Synagogue, the largest temple of the Jewish community in Berlin. Its golden dome reaches 50 m, and the interior can accommodate 3 thousand. faithful. It has its headquarters in the Centrum Judaicum foundation, which deals with the protection of Jewish culture in Germany. The building designed by Eduard Knoblauch and Friedrich August Stüler was erected in the years 1859–1866. It was then the largest synagogue in Germany.
The richly equipped and decorated interior of the synagogue was completely destroyed during the so-called Kristallnacht on November 9-10, 1938, when the temple was set on fire by Nazi militias. Services in the ruined building took place until 1940.
After World War II, the synagogue was in East Berlin. It remained in ruins until the end of the 1980s, when the communist authorities decided to restore it. The works ended with the ceremonial unveiling of the reconstructed domes of the temple in 1991.
