The chapel is the central part of the Aachen Cathedral, which is one of the oldest in Europe. It is considered a masterpiece of the Carolingian Renaissance. In the years 936-1531 coronations of the Ludolfing dynasty took place there. The chapel with the entire cathedral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
