Le Tampon is a town in Réunion, situated in the vicinity of the most important and active volcanoes on the island. It is a several-minute journey from the coast, and the mountainous surroundings are extremely picturesque.
The city is surrounded by magnificent volcanic landscapes. An unusual place is the Plaine des Cafres, a plateau with visible low volcanic cones and very steep walls, cut with fissures. From here there are beautiful views of the entire area.
The attraction of Le Tampon is the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes, which regularly emits clouds of smoke and steam. The last volcanic eruption took place in 2017. Due to the proximity of several volcanoes and the nature of the entire island, Le Tampon was built and open to the public to visit Volcano City, an interactive museum showing how volcanic phenomena occur and what contributed to the formation of the island.
Due to its height, Le Tampon is cooler than the coast, so you can escape the summer heat here. A popular form of relaxation is hiking along the trails leading to viewpoints such as Bois Court.
