Le Maïdo
Local name: Le Maïdo
The volcanic peak is located on the island of Reunion and measures 2,200 meters above sea level. It offers a panoramic view of the Mafate glacier circus, a nature reserve, and the west coast of the island with picturesque white sand beaches and surrounded by coral reefs.
Le Maïdo is a good place not only for hiking and climbing, but also for mountain biking. Every year, the international cycling event Megavalanche takes place on its western slope, during which riders travel from the top to one of the beaches. In summer, you can also ride a horse or rent a quad bike on designated routes.
There is a climatological station and an atmospheric observatory at the top. It has been operating since 2012. Its small building was awarded the 2016 Reunion Island Architectural Award. It can only be observed from the outside, it is not open to tourists.
