Vaison-la-Romaine is a historic Provencal town with many remains from the Roman and Medieval periods. Crossed by the Ouveze River, the city offers a unique experience for all lovers of history.
The city is often called the Roman pearl of Provence. There are two large archaeological sites here: La Villasse and Puymin, where you can see, among others Roman theater, remains of dignitaries' houses, temples and public utility buildings. The Roman Bridge from the 1st century AD is perfectly preserved, and still provides communication between the parts of the city on both sides of the Ouveze.
Due to its location on the two banks of the river Vaison-la-Romaine, it is naturally divided into two parts, the Upper Town and the Lower Town. The Upper Town has perfectly preserved medieval buildings, and at its highest point there are castle ruins. Within the Upper Town, among its narrow, steep streets, you can also find the Saint-Queinn Church with an apse from the end of the 8th century and a cathedral built in the 11th century.
On the other side of the river is the newer part of the town. Stone, traditional houses and narrow streets also dominate here. There are a lot of restaurants and cafes here, and the atmosphere of the town encourages you to walk and rest over a cup of coffee.
