A statue of August Comte stands in front of it.
The Sorbonne was once but part of the University of Paris. Over time, its name was transferred to the entire university. Its buildings were successively built in various parts of the city, and in the 17th century to focus primarily in the Latin Quarter. Currently, the historic buildings of the Sorbonne contain auditoriums, representative rooms, libraries, and university headquarters. Students have largely moved to new campuses.
The most famous building belonging to the Sorbonne is the chapel. It was built in the first half of the 17th century, and the dome was designed by the famous French architect Jacques Lemercier. Inside the church is the tomb of Cardinal Richelieu.
