The National Museum of Medieval Art is housed in the Gothic building of the Cluny Hotel. Has one of the three largest art collections of this period in the world. You can see examples of painting, stone and wooden sculptures, woodcarving, goldsmiths and jewelry, stained glass and textile products from the end of antiquity to the late Middle Ages.
In the Middle Ages, the building occupied by the Museum belonged to the abbots of Cluny Monastery. It is one of the best-preserved medieval residential residences in Paris. In the 15th century it was rebuilt in the Gothic-Renaissance style. The museum has been here since 1833. Initially, these were hobby collections of Alexandre du Somerarde. Over time, they have grown into one of the world's largest collections of medieval art.
The museum has in its collections works of art originating in large part from liquidated churches in France. The oldest works come from the times of the Gauls and belong to the art of late antiquity. The collections are extremely rich. At the museum you can admire stained glass, panel painting, jewelry and jewelry, artistic craftsmanship and sculpture. Here is one of the largest collection of upholstery in the world - one-sided fabrics with figural or floral motifs. They are arranged in cycles depicting, among others, Lady with a unicorn, which in medieval art had a very important symbolic meaning.
