The penitential chapel is located in a place where after guillotine the bodies of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were buried. It is a stone building on a Greek cross plan with a Doric portico. Inside there is an altar and sculptures depicting the royal couple.
Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette died on a scaffold in 1793. Initially, their bodies were thrown into a ditch and covered with lime and soil. In 1802, the burial ground was bought by royalist Desclozeaux and planted trees. The corpse of the royal couple was exhumed in 1815 and transferred to Saint Denis Cathedral. At the same time, a chapel was built at the burial site, which was to be a sign of penance for the death of the monarchs.
The chapel was designed by Pierre François Léonard Fontaine. It is a building reminiscent of French Renaissance buildings. In the interior lit by the lantern at the top of the dome, there are statues of Louis XVII and Marie Antoinette. The altar was placed where their grave was. The chapel is surrounded by a small park.
