Le Marais

Local name: Le Marais

Le Marais is a historic district on the north bank of the Seine. It is located in the triangle of Republic Square - Bastille Square - Pompidou Center. It is a district of aristocratic houses and palaces, picturesque gardens and famous museums, including Pablo Picasso and Victor Hugo.

In the Middle Ages, Le Marais was home to gardens and green areas, where the Templars had their possessions. At the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, this area was incorporated into the borders of Paris. During the reign of Henry IV, many aristocratic residences were built here, including the royal palace. The district fell into decline after the court moved to the Louvre, and many industrial plants were built here in the 19th century.

Nowadays, you can admire the Renaissance and Baroque palaces of the aristocracy, which house cultural and scientific institutions. The representative place of the district is Vosges Square, where there is, among others, the Victor Hugo Museum. Within this area there is also a small Jewish quarter with kosher shops and synagogues. In recent years, Le Marais has also been associated with the premises of the LGBT community.
