Obernai is an Alsatian town with a beautifully preserved historic center. There are numerous vineyards in the vicinity, and the hilly countryside invites to walking and cycling.
In the early Middle Ages, Obernai belonged to the princes of Alsace. There was a castle here, but it has not survived to our times. Due to its location, these areas were for centuries the subject of a dispute between Germany and France, and the border was finally formed here only after the First World War.
Today's Obernai is a charming town with typical Alsatian buildings consisting of half-timbered houses with beautifully flowering windows and balconies. In the city, you can also see several old wells, a clock tower, the ruins of the 15th-century monastery of the regular canons and the mansions from the 19th century. The most important of them and one of the main attractions of Obernai is the Domaine de la Léonardsau. Currently, it houses a museum of horses and horse carriages.
