Built in 1892, the 21-ton lead fountain is the work of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who gained worldwide fame as the designer of the New York Statue of Liberty. Initially, the fountain was to be erected in Bordeaux, but because of too high costs the project was abandoned to Lyon.
