Les Eyzies is often referred to as the world capital of prehistory. There are famous caves where rock paintings were discovered, as well as archaeological sites with the remains of primitive human settlements.
The town is small and beautifully situated in the Weser valley. It is situated at the foot of a rocky cliff with numerous caves. The entire archaeological complex is the highlight of Les Eyzies and the surrounding area. There is also a modern National Museum of Prehistory in the village.
Les Eyzies area is known as the site of discovery of the first traces of primitive man in Europe. In 1868, during the construction of the road, the remains of the rock shelter in Cro-Magnon were found. Today, in the vicinity of the overhang, there is a reconstruction of the settlement with figures of its inhabitants.
The entire archaeological complex, entered on the UNESCO list, includes several sites. The most important of them, apart from the Cro-Magnon, are the Grand Roc, Font-de-Gaume cave, Aint-Cirq cave and the Combarelles cave.
