Fréjus is a resort on the Côte d'Azur with sandy beaches, a seaside promenade and a harbor. Several significant ancient and medieval monuments have also been preserved here.
The city was founded by the Romans. To this day, an amphitheater has been preserved here, used for numerous cultural events and bullfights, the remains of city gates and an aqueduct. After the fall of the Empire, Fréjus became the seat of a bishop and an important religious center on this part of the coast. The testimony of those times is the cathedral complex, built from the 5th to the 15th century. It includes a gothic cathedral, cloisters and an octagonal, early Christian baptistery. There is an Archaeological Museum at the cathedral, which collects collections from excavations conducted in the city.
Today's Fréjus is primarily a bustling, fashionable seaside resort. Along the sandy beach there is a shaded promenade full of tourists looking for entertainment in the evenings. There are numerous clubs, restaurants, a casino and a port where tourist boats and yachts are moored.
