Casteil is a tiny village in the Pyrenees. In its vicinity is the Romanesque monastery of St. Martin on Canigou Hill.
The town has a medieval origin and is picturesquely situated among forested mountain slopes. It has traditional buildings and a lot of nice stone houses. The surroundings are perfect for mountain hiking.
The biggest attraction of Casteil is the Monastery of St. Martin na Canigou, the tour of which requires a trail from the village. The structure is spectacularly situated on a rocky ridge overlooking the valley. The building of the monastery is Romanesque and has not changed much since the 12th century. It is one of the best examples of this style in southern France.
Also nearby is a popular family attraction, the Casteil Animal Park, where bears, yaks, various species of monkeys, wallabies, lions and much more live in near-natural conditions.
