The structure erected in 1753 is the work of architect André Portier, the creator of the concept of replacing the old city fortifications with tree-lined avenues and representative gates (Burgundy Gate, Aquitaine Gate). The name of the gate is derived from the temple of Jupiter, which was supposed to be in this place during the Gallo-Roman times.
