Alès is a town situated at the foot of the Cavennes Massif, close to the boundaries of the national park that encompasses this picturesque area. It can be a good starting point for hiking in the mountains and for active tourism.
The city has a small historic center, centered around the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, combining the features of various epochs from Gothic to Classicism. Other interesting buildings include a fort designed by the famous French military architect Sebastian Vauban and the former bishop's palace, which now houses the town hall.
