The small, picturesque town was founded in the 12th century in the meander of the Ohře River. The most important tourist attractions are located in the historic center, fully protected and classified as a monument.
During a visit to the city, it is worth visiting, above all, the Gothic castle from the 12th century. It was transformed into a museum and you can see archaeological and historical exhibitions there. A valuable collection of porcelain has also been gathered there and a torture chamber has been reconstructed. An opera festival takes place every year in the amphitheater adjacent to the castle. Near the fortress there is an early-baroque town hall, built in 1682, and the baroque church of St. Wenceslas, erected in the 18th century on the site of an older medieval temple.
As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that scenes for the James Bond movie Casino Royale were filmed in the city. Loket played the role of Montenegro at that time.
