Mary Magdalene Church
Local name: Kostel Maří Magdalény
The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene belongs to the most significant Baroque monuments in the Czech Republic. Built on an ellipse plan, the temple with a two-tower facade has a wonderfully decorated interior. In its underground there are crypts, including the ossuary and the Altar of the Holy Sepulcher.
The church was erected in the years 1733-1736 on the place of a Gothic building. Its remains are crypts located under the temple. The author of the design was the greatest Czech baroque architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. Behind the two-tower facade decorated with cornices and pilasters is an elliptical nave surrounded by side chapels. The interior covered with a dome is covered with sculptural decorations. There is a complex of five baroque, gilded altars and organs.
The underground of the Church show the layout of the former Gothic temple. The remains of people buried in the former church cemetery were moved here, creating a grave chapel. In other parts of the crypts you can see carved altars depicting the Prayer in Ogrojec, the Crucifixion and Jesus in the Tomb.
