City Hall of České Budějovice
Local name: Magistrát města České Budějovice
The town hall in České Budějovice was built in the 18th century. It is a baroque building with a richly decorated facade and a clock tower. Inside, the original interior of the rooms with a wall painting of the biblical Court of Solomon has been preserved.
The original town hall was built in the Middle Ages. Over time, the houses of the market were joined to meet the needs of the office. In the 16th century they received a Renaissance decor. The town hall was destroyed by fire in the late 17th century. The city council decided to reconstruct the buildings. It was made under the direction of Anton Erhard Martinelli. He used the walls of Renaissance tenement houses, so on the ground floor you can now admire the vaulted rooms that are much older than the facade and its decorations.
The town hall is a three-story building. At the corners there are small square towers, and above the central part a clock tower covered with a baroque helmet. Sculptures depicting four virtues were placed in the facade: prudence, justice, abstinence and bravery. Inside, you can see the Representative Hall with rich stucco decorations and baroque frescoes. The tower has a carillon mounted on which up to 80 different melodies can be made.
