Church of the Sacrifice of Our Lady
Local name: Kostel Obětování Panny Marie
The Dominican monastery in České Budějovice consists of a church dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, residential buildings and a belfry, called the White Tower. Fragments of city walls are also part of it. Precious medieval wall paintings have survived in the church.
The monastery was founded at the end of the 13th century, shortly after the foundation of České Budějovice. Its buildings were part of the city fortifications. Construction was completed around 1300. Despite numerous fires, the early Gothic shape of the church and monastery has survived to this day. Today, it houses an art school.
The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary is an early Gothic basilica with high, pointed windows and a transept. Is the dominant building of the whole complex. Despite the damage, the largest medieval polychrome depicting Saint Christopher has been preserved in the Czech Republic. You can also admire the foundation polychrome depicting the founder kneeling before Jesus and Mary. Fragments of the polychrome are also preserved in the vaulted monastery cloisters.
