The Vela Spila cave is located at an altitude of about 130 meters above sea level north of the village of Vela Luka. The grotto is 40 meters long, 40 meters wide and 17 meters high. The light enters the interior through openings in the vault, some of which are natural and some have been artificially hollowed out by man.
The cave can be reached by walking trail. The area around the cave is covered with olive groves. There is also a very beautiful view of the town of Vela Luka and the entire island and the coast. Currently, due to good acoustic conditions, concerts are organized in the cave.
The cave is of great importance from a speleological and archaeological point of view. Archaeological research has been conducted here since the mid-twentieth century, which confirmed that people inhabited this cave as early as the fifth century BC. Fragments of ceramics were found here, considered to be one of the oldest ceramics in Europe.
