Čikola Canyon
Local name: Kanjon Čikole
The Čikola River Canyon is a protected area since 1967. Its depth reaches 130 meters. In the winter months a fast karst river flows through here, which dries in summer. As a result, this place offers many opportunities for hiking, rock climbing and canoeing.
The flora and fauna of this area are also very interesting. It consists of almost 300 species of plants, and more than 30 species of animals, the most numerous of which are bats. Traces of human presence originating from Paleolithic have also been found in caves located in the canyon.
The Čikola river itself is 46 kilometers long and is the longest tributary of Krka. The beginning and end of the deep canyon that has been carved are marked by two medieval fortresses: Gradina, which towers over Drniš and the fort Ključica in the lower reaches of the river.
