The National Theater is housed in a neoclassical building designed by the famous Viennese theater architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner. There are three rooms in it. The main one can seat 860 people, and the others 120 and 70 people respectively. The repertoire of the theater includes both classical Bulgarian and international works.
The theater was built in 1905-1906. At the beginning of the 1920s, it was partially damaged by a fire, but was quickly rebuilt. Further destruction took place during the bombing of the city during World War II, which led to the collapse of the southern wing of the building. Already in 1945, the theater reopened its doors. The last thorough renovation was carried out in the 1970s, when, among others, Chamber Hall has been added.
