The largest and most famous temple in Sofia. The cathedral is the seat of the patrachy of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the most important church in the country. It was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in honor of Tsar Alexander II, who contributed to the regaining of independence by Bulgaria in 1878. It is a neo-Byzantine style building with a central gilded dome and a tower above the entrance. The interior is covered with paintings depicting scenes from the Holy Bible and figures of saints.
