The National Gallery is the largest art museum in the country. Its collection includes about 50,000 paintings, sculptures, prints and other exhibits. Among them is the most extensive collection of Bulgarian Christian art from the 4th-19th centuries, as well as a rich collection of medieval paintings, with over 4,000 icons.
Here you can see not only Bulgarian national art, but also works from all over Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Permanent exhibitions include history of Bulgarian painting from the Renaissance to the 1960s, a collection of sculptures and icon painting. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the gallery regularly organizes temporary thematic exhibitions, seminars and concerts.
The history of the gallery dates back to 1948, when it replaced the Sofia Art Gallery and took over most of its exhibits. Currently, the main building of the museum is housed in the former royal palace.
