The historic Orthodox church stands on the plot of the Russian Embassy. Its construction lasted from the end of the 19th century to 1914. Initially, it was intended only for embassy employees, but since the end of World War I it has gathered the Russian community living in Sofia.
The architecture of the temple refers to the traditional Russian religious style from the 19th century. The church is decorated with mosaics, sculptures and frescoes by Vasily Perminov and his artistic team. The building is crowned with a 19 m high central dome surrounded by five smaller gilded domes. The temple bells were a gift from the Russian Tsar Nicholas II.
The tomb of Archbishop Serafim Sobolev, proclaimed a saint in 2016, is located in the church's crypt. The faithful send prayers and requests to him, writing them down on paper and leaving them in a special box next to the tomb.
