Wiels is a leading institution of contemporary art that exhibits the work of national and international artists, both established and emerging. It is a place of creation and dialogue in which art and architecture are the foundations for discussing current events. The institution leads countless educational and socio-artistic initiatives.
The contemporary art center opened its doors in 2007. It is housed in a restored building of the former Wielemans brewery from the 1930s and is one of the few examples of Belgium's modernist industrial architecture. It consists of three exhibition platforms with a total area of 1800 m2. In addition, there are studio workshops for residential artists, an auditorium and a foyer, a bookstore and a cafe with old, tiled walls and huge copper vats.
The institution does not have its own collections, instead it presents temporary exhibitions of national and international artists. The creators who showed their works here were, among others Yayoi Kusama, Mike Kelley, Mark Leckey, and Edith Dekyndt.
