Halle Gate - Museum

Local name: Porte de Hal - Musée

The medieval gate is the only city gate preserved to modern times. It currently houses a permanent exhibition devoted to the city's history and a collection of weapons and armor. You can watch here, among others ceremonial armor of Archduke Albrecht, Governor of the Netherlands. On the top floor of the building there is a viewpoint from which you can admire the city panorama.

The gate was built in 1381 as part of the second row of city walls. Initially, it was additionally protected by a grille and had a drawbridge. In 1847, she was included in the Royal Museums of Art and History. In the second half of the nineteenth century, it was restored and given its current appearance referring to neo-Gothic castles. The author of the reconstruction project was architect Hendrik Beyaert.

In 1976, the building was closed due to poor technical condition. It was not until the beginning of the 21st century that it underwent a complete renovation and was reopened to visitors.
