The neoclassical edifice was erected in 1834 under the name Théâtre Royal Français, whose hall housed 900 spectators. For many decades, the theater offered only French-language repertoire. Currently, the building houses the headquarters of Toneelhuis, resulting from the merger of the Royal Dutch Theater and the avant-garde band Blue Monday Compagnie.
