Mozart Square

Local name: Mozartplatz

Mozartplatz, or Mozart Square, is one of the central points of Salzburg. The square is surrounded by Baroque and Classicist buildings, and in its center there is a statue commemorating Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. At the foot of the statue is a Roman mosaic.

The square was created on the initiative of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in the first half of the 17th century. To create a square several houses were demolished. Originally, the place was called Michaelerplatz, and the square received its current name after erecting the Mozart monument here in 1842.

The monument by Ludwig Schwanthal represents the Classicist style. Initially, he was supposed to stand in a different place, but eventually the decision was made to put him in his current place. There was a baroque fountain here that had to be removed. During the works, a Roman mosaic with an inscription was discovered. This delayed the ceremonial unveiling of the monument, but the mosaic has been preserved.
