Church of St. Cajetan

Local name: Kajetanerkirche

The church Kajetana was the first temple in Salzburg built in the style of Italian Baroque. Its interior impresses with intricate stucco and colorful frescoes depicting Saint Kajetan ascending to heaven. The most important attraction of the church are the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta), which are a copy of the famous stairs located in Rome.

The Holy Stairs were built here in 1712. On the second, eleventh and twenty-eighth degrees crosses were mounted, symbolizing the drops of the blood of Christ. Two of these three crosses have survived to this day. Just like the Holy Stairs in Rome, you also get on those knees.

The church itself was built at the end of the 17th century on the initiative of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich (it was already completed under Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun). Initially, the church belonged to the Order of Theaterists, who also had their own monastery here. This order was dissolved in 1809, and the church began to decline. It was also partially destroyed during World War II, but was restored.
