Giurgiu is an important port on the Danube and the largest border crossing with Bulgaria. There is the famous Friendship Bridge connecting both banks of the river. A lot of old buildings from Turkish times and from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries have been preserved in the city center.
The town was probably founded in the 15th century and from the beginning it was a river port and an important stop on the way towards Istanbul. It went down in history especially in 1595, when the Wallachian army and its allies defeated the Turks here. Currently, it is primarily a border city, a large commercial and transit center on one of the most important European road routes.
The oldest monument in the city are the ruins of the medieval Giurgiu fortress . Only the foundations and fragments of walls remained. In the past, it guarded the river crossing and was an important stronghold of Wallachia. In the center of the maista you can also see the Turkish clock tower and a small monastery, St. Nicholas .
Giurgiu's attractions also include the Teohari Antonescu District Museum and Aleja Park , which is a popular place for walks for residents. The most important cultural center in the city is the Nicolae Bălănescu Athenaeum built in the neoclassical style and housing a theater and a concert hall.
