The street runs through the historic center of the city, near the ruins of the former prince's court, built by Vlad III the Impaler. Currently, it houses many restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and retail and service outlets.
In the period from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century, the street was the main commercial area not only in the city, but also in the entire Wallachia region. It housed craft workshops, including watchmakers, shoemakers, goldsmiths and coopers. The locations of the old guilds can be recognized by the modern names of some streets departing from the main thoroughfare.
