Revolutionsplatz

Lokaler Name: Piața Revoluției

The historic square is located in the center of Bucharest. It is surrounded by state and cultural institutions. Among them is the Royal Palace, which now houses the Art Museum, the Romanian Athenaeum, the Ministry of the Interior and the Central University Library.

In addition, there are several smaller monuments in the square, including the equestrian statue of King Charles I. It is a bronze statue, 13 meters high and weighing nearly 13 tons. It is a copy of the monument created in 1930 by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. On the square you can also see monuments depicting two Romanian politicians, Iuliu Maniu and Corneliu Coposu. The fourth monument is dedicated to the victims of the Romanian Revolution of 1989, during which communism was overthrown in the country.

It is worth mentioning that two mass meetings took place in the square, which were a symbolic peak of popularity and the moment of the fall of Ceaușescu. The first took place in 1968 and the second on December 21, 1989.
