Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle is a water castle in East Sussex from the 14th century. It has the status of a monument, although only ruins remain of the former monumental building - the castle was probably destroyed in the 16th century as a result of the English Civil War. It was partially renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries and today attracts tourists primarily through its charming location.

Bodiam Castle was built in 1385 on a quadrangle plan by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight Richard II. The castle served not only as the Dalyngrigg family home and the center of the Bodiam court, but was also to be a strong defensive element against the French invasion during the Century War. For many centuries, it served its owners as a fortress, which is confirmed by architectural solutions, including moat or barbican in the main gate leading to the castle.
