18 Stafford Terrace
18 Stafford Terrace, formerly known as Linley Sambourne House, was the home of Punch illustrator Edward Linley Sambourne. The house is now open to the public as a museum. You can feel the atmosphere of a nineteenth-century tenement house, whose furniture and decorations reflect the artistic taste of the era. Sambourne's works and photos are also on display here.
When the Sambournes moved in in 1875, 18 Stafford Terrace was almost a new townhouse. It was Linley Sambourne who began the reconstruction of the house in accordance with the style of aestheticism. Today it is a great example of middle class aesthetics. His influence can still be seen throughout the home, from decorative sunflower motifs in stained glass through William Morris wallpapers that hang in the rooms, to the exposed collection of white and blue Chinese imported porcelain.
At home, scenes were made for films such as "Room with a View" and "Maurice" by Merchant Ivory and for the production of BBC "Enchanted April".
