The Courtauld Gallery
An art museum located at Somerset House on Strandt in Central London. Courtauld Gallery was opened in 1932 and since then has accumulated 530 paintings and over 26,000 drawings and prints in its collection. It gained international fame mainly thanks to its huge collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works.
Like most art museums, the Courtauld Gallery collection consists primarily of donations and includes works from the Middle Ages to the present day. There are not only paintings, but also sculptures and drawings. It is worth visiting here to see the masterpieces of such painters as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne.
The name of the gallery comes from the name of its founder, art and industry collector Samuel Courtauld, who was helped by collecting funds and organizing the venture: diplomat and collector Lord Lee from Fareham and art historian Sir Robert Witt.
