London Coliseum
The English National Opera (ENO) is housed in the Coliseum Theater, also known as the London Coliseum. Next to the Royal Opera House is the second most important British opera theaters. The opera repertoire includes classic works sung in English. The most famous operas of Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and Mozart were staged here. In addition, musicals and operettas appear regularly, and since the eighties Broadway shows have also appeared.
Although the history of the national opera dates back to the end of the 19th century, its official opening at the Coliseum Theater took place in 1904. The inaugural performance took place on December 24. During World War II, the building was closed due to security issues. This did not mean, however, that the performances were suspended - a troupe of actors and singers then went on tour of the country to raise the morale of the British. Theater and opera did not return to the Coliseum Theater until 1968.
