St Paul’s Church

St Paul's Church is an Anglican temple, the first completely new church that was built in London after the Reformation period. The building was designed by Indigo Jones, an architect and creator of theatrical scenery, quickly gained the name of "church of actors". Theater people not only came to St. Paul's Church for mass, but also played performances, and many of them were buried here. Currently, the Iris Theater is located in the church, a professional orchestra is operating with it, and dance festivals are taking place.

The first recorded performance at St Paul's Church took place on May 9, 1662 - it was the puppet premiere of the show "Punch and Judy". The premiere of "Pigmalion" by Bernard Shaw was also held within the walls of the temple. Here rests many prominent artists such as film actress Edith Evans (three Oscar nominees), the great 19th-century Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry or the creators of the famous comic operas - Gilbert and Sullivan - in the church there are commemorative plaques dedicated to Charlie Chaplin and Boris Karloff - the most famous performer role of Frankenstein.

The architecture of the building erected in 1663 is an eclectic mix of styles, modeled on the temples of ancient Rome. Apparently Lord Bedford, the church founder, was to ask Indigo Jones to design a building "not much better than a barn", to which the architect was to reply that in that case he would create "the most beautiful barn in England". St Paul's Church was rebuilt in 1789 by Thomas Hardwick. Less than six years later, it burned down and obtained its present form after the reconstruction completed in 1798.
