St Clement Danes Church
An Anglican church located in the City of Westminster in central London. This baroque style temple was designed by Christopher Wren and its construction was completed in 1682, although the history of the Church of St. Clement Danes dates back to the ninth century. The site is on the UK National Heritage List.
St Clement Danes Church currently functions as the main temple of the Royal Air Force. Inside you will find numerous references to this function, such as the memorial located on the church floor. Outside, however, we can admire the statues of two leaders of the Royal Air Force: Arthur Harris and Hugh Dowding.
There are several explanations for the name of the church of St. Clement Danes. One of them, the most popular, is a reference to history: in the 9th century, the Danes colonized the village of Aldwych on the river between the City of London and the future place of Westminster. They decided to start a church in this place. This was at a time when half of England was Danish and London was on the dividing line between the English and Danish.
