Sir Winston Churchill Statue
The Winston Churchill Monument is located in Parliament Square, opposite Westminster Palace. This is where - as the politician himself claimed - his statue should stand. The monument is 3.7 meters high and was made of bronze by Ivor Roberts-Jones. The very name of the former prime minister was engraved in capital letters on a 2.4 meter high base.
The monument was unveiled nearly twenty years after Churchill's death, that is November 1, 1973, by his wife. Queen Elizabeth II gave a short speech then. Queen Mother, then Prime Minister Edward Heath and his four predecessors were also present during the ceremony. The Royal Marines then played Churchill's favorite music.
While working on the monument, Roberts-Jones was criticized that the sculpture more resembles Mussolini instead of Churchill. Under the influence of the Churchill Statue Committee members, the artist had to make some changes.
