Cabinet War Rooms

Located inside: Imperial War Museum

Churchill War Rooms, or Narad Churchill Rooms, are part of the Imperial War Museum, which is devoted to military history. These are secret, underground rooms in which the British government had its headquarters during World War II. They are in the Westminster district.

A basement near Parliament Square was chosen as the secret, secure seat of government. Its walls were reinforced and silenced, communication devices and ventilation were installed. War Rooms was commissioned on August 27, 1939. The most important rooms were the so-called The Map Room, in which daily reports were created, and the Cabinet Room, where government meetings were held. Winston Churchill, who became prime minister in 1940, managed military operations from there and organized a total of 115 meetings in the room.

After the war, entry to War Rooms was only possible after receiving a special pass. It wasn't until 1984, when they became part of the Imperial War Museum, that they were made available to tourists.
