London's Roman Amphitheatre

Located inside: Guildhall Art Gallery

The ruins of the Roman amphitheater in London were found in 1985 during the construction of the Guildhall Art Gallery. They are currently located in the basement of the Guildhall complex and are open to the public. The exhibition is organized in a darkened room, where you can see the remains of the walls and the sewage system of the original amphitheater. Missing elements are supplemented by light reconstruction.

The first Roman amphitheater in London was built of wood in 70 AD, and was rebuilt at the beginning of the second century. Stone entrances and walls were built then. The amphitheater was used for various public events such as gladiator and animal fights, public executions, and for religious activities. When the Romans left the British Isles in the 4th century, the amphitheater lay deserted for hundreds of years. In the 11th century the area was rebuilt, and around the 12th century the first town hall was built here.
