The London Wall Walk
London Wall was created in the first centuries AD to protect the city of Londinium founded by the Romans. Based on the coins found during archaeological work, the time to erect the first stone wall was determined for 190-225. In the next millennium, the wall was expanded and served military functions until the mid-seventeenth century, when residential buildings were erected on both sides of the wall and the fortifications were gradually dismantled. Today, only small fragments of the London Wall are preserved, including the oldest Romanesque walls from almost 2,000. years.
Originally, London fortifications (then Londinium) stretched over a length of about 4 km, surrounding an area of over 130 hectares. The wall was built of irregular stones, only hewn stone blocks were used at the gates and corners. It is not known how high the fortifications were - the highest walls preserved until today reach almost 11 meters and are about 2.5 m thick.
Fragments of the oldest Roman fortifications have been preserved in the Tower of London, as well as in the vicinity of the Tower Hill subway station, where there is also a life-size antique monument of Emperor Trajan.
