Peckham Rye Park & Common
Peckham Rye Park is located on the Peck River. It has a characteristic triangle shape and covers an area of about 42 hectares. There is an outdoor gym, bowls, football field and skate park. Two playgrounds were built for children. There is also a cafe and a pub nearby, located in a historic building known as the Clock House.
The first mention of Peckham Rye Park comes from the fourteenth century. The park itself in its present form was created in the 1860s. In 1894, the area was bought by the London County Council and expanded to include land belonging to the nearby Homestall Farm.
In the 1860s, William Blake was to experience a series of visions and revelations that affected his work in the current park. The poet claimed to have seen, among others tree full of angels. Around the park, the action of the novel "Ballad of Peckham Rye" by Muriel Spark also takes place.
