The House Mill
The House Mill is the largest still functioning water mill in the world. On the southern facade there is an eighteenth-century coat of arms with the initials DSB. The House Mill Gallery operates here, in which both local and world-famous artists exhibit their works. Exhibitions are temporary. Guided tours are organized here, there is no possibility of exploring the building alone.
The House Mill was built on an artificial island called Three Mills. The first mills were established here before 1086. Their presence was then recorded in the Domesday Book, England's oldest land and property register. The House Mill's foundations date back to the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, but the current building was not built until 1776 after the destruction of the previous mill. Residential houses stood on both sides, hence its name.
